I hate to be the one to break it to you: Not everything is going to go perfectly at your wedding.

I’ll give you an example: At my own wedding, the order we put in to have pounds (and pounds) of ice delivered just never showed up. My undies showed through my dress (borrowed a slip from a bridesmaid). And the venue had FORGOTTEN to order the colors of accent fabric squares for my tables.

Sigh.

Oh well. It all worked out.

That’s the beauty of having a day surrounded by people who love you.

They all want you to have a perfect wedding day, and they are glad to help you get over any little hiccups that show up.

We still got married. It was still one of the happiest days of my life, and those little details are some of the real moments that I actually remember from the haze of the wedding day.

Another example?

This photo is from my sister-in-law’s wedding that I did NOT shoot but was the maid-of-honor.

All of us bridesmaids spent months and dollars getting our bridesmaid dresses exactly to perfection. Hair and shoes and jewelry and alterations were all planned to a T.

I even had a seamstress add straps to my dress!

Even with all that planning, even with 5 bridesmaids paying attention, we still missed something….

The lining of the dress showed any time you were a position other than standing up straight.

Sitting, bending of any kind and (of course) dancing, one could see 2-3 inches of different-fabric dress lining sticking out the bottom of the dress hem.

So, what else could we do?

Right before the wedding ceremony, we found a pair of scissors and helped each other quickly hack off a few inches of fabric!

Obviously not as planned, but still a real moment at a real wedding.

been planning a mini-headshot session for myself. It’s so nice that my hubby wants to learn how to use my cameras (finally)
we’re taking 2 big vacations this summer (we’re just lucked out this year) …. hopefully I’ll come home w/ pics of me there too!
shot a wedding over the weekend where the cops came twice! That’s how you know it was a good party….
I love that it has stayed cool and overcast here in SoCal so long …. I don’t handle heat very well.
Speaking of which, Andrew went to Chicago recently. And decided he never wants to move to the Midwest! too cold for us L.A. kids.
I shot with a new second shooter over the weekend and I kind of love her. You need to meet her!

Los Angeles wedding with [b]ecker – sneak peek

Over the weekend, I had the privilege of 2nd shooting a wedding in Los Angeles with [b]ecker – OC wedding photographer superstar!

On Saturday, the ceremony was at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic Church, with a reception at Pacific Palms Hotel.

Such a fun, family-filled wedding ….

Wayfarer’s Chapel wedding – Kristian and Stephanie – sneak peek

Kristian and Stephanie left late late last night for their honeymoon to the Cook Islands (jealous!) …. but I made sure to upload one of these images to Facebook and tag her so she could maybe get a glimpse of their beautiful day before leaving.

And, holy geez, was it beautiful.

Marian, their event director at Wayfarer’s Chapel, kept telling me how windy and overcast it was the weekend before. But Saturday, for Kristian and Stephanie, it could not have been more perfect…..

Congratulations, you two!

Pear Valley Vineyard wedding – Keith and Shannon sneak peek

Keith and Shannon got married on Saturday (another destination wedding for me)!

These 2 are SO cute together, with their silly little nicknames and their affections …

so cute.

The wedding took place in Paso Robles (wine country) at Pear Valley Vineyard. This is a newer vineyard that you may not have come across if you haven’t been to Paso Robles recently. WAIT til you see the pictures I have in store … such a lovely place for a wedding …

DIY Wedding Project – Chris and Nichole’s centerpieces

Back last August I traveled to Idaho to photography Chris and Nichole‘s beach-themed wedding.

Those 2 really put a lot of thought and personal touches into their day. It was so cool to look at all the details and know that they both decided on these things together to make sure the day was a real reflection of their personalities.

This, of course, involved a little bit of creativity and thinking-outside-the-box.

You might be surprised to learn that their centerpieces were all silk flowers. Gorgeous, easy, could be done ahead of time, and cost-effective for the exotic flowers.

They purchased the square and rectangle vases (maybe from Michael’s or Walmart?) and were able to fill them with sand ahead of time (no need to worry about water and freshness-sell-by-dates when dealing with silk flowers).

The flowers were all bought and trimmed ahead of time …

Ok, theoretically this could all be done ahead of time. I think, actually, someone ran out of time and they were all done the night before. Impressive but not ideal. Also, not necessary when doing this kind of centerpiece.

The centerpieces as a whole consisted of 1 tall, square vase with sand and flowers, and 2 shorter, rectangle vases with sand and (lit) candles.

Easy.

These were all detailed with shells and burlap throughout the room….

So classy and so easy. I’m all about lessening the stress as much as possible on your wedding day.

I hope these photos and centerpieces gave you ideas for your own DIY wedding projects!

In a dress shop in Italy

For various, multiple, unfortunately unavoidable reasons, Angela had to buy her wedding dress when she arrived in Florence, 2 days before her wedding.

Add it to the list of things I never thought I would get to experience :

Picking up a wedding dress in a tiny little couture bridal shop in Florence, where the bride is fitted by the designer and the only other employee is the designer’s little Italian mother who doesn’t speak a word of English.

Awesome.

Plus : at least once every wedding I try to take a self-portrait.

One year ago today Andrew and I were in Las Vegas for Beth and Jenny’s wedding.

Ladies, I hope you Valentine’s Day weekend + Anniversary weekend was so special!
