Tucson wedding: Michelle and Dusty sneak peek

Last weekend I spent a long travel morning to get from Los Angeles to Tucson by about 12:30p!

I wouldn’t do that for just anybody, but a few weeks ago my dear (adorable, hilarious) friend Michelle told me she was getting married, and by the way would I photograph it for her?

Um, yes. Of course! So, we made it happen!

These are just a couple images from the day – Michelle was so calm and radiant the whole day!

real moment at a real wedding

I hate to be the one to break it to you: Not everything is going to go perfectly at your wedding.

I’ll give you an example: At my own wedding, the order we put in to have pounds (and pounds) of ice delivered just never showed up. My undies showed through my dress (borrowed a slip from a bridesmaid). And the venue had FORGOTTEN to order the colors of accent fabric squares for my tables.

Sigh.

Oh well. It all worked out.

That’s the beauty of having a day surrounded by people who love you.

They all want you to have a perfect wedding day, and they are glad to help you get over any little hiccups that show up.

We still got married. It was still one of the happiest days of my life, and those little details are some of the real moments that I actually remember from the haze of the wedding day.

Another example?

This photo is from my sister-in-law’s wedding that I did NOT shoot but was the maid-of-honor.

All of us bridesmaids spent months and dollars getting our bridesmaid dresses exactly to perfection. Hair and shoes and jewelry and alterations were all planned to a T.

I even had a seamstress add straps to my dress!

Even with all that planning, even with 5 bridesmaids paying attention, we still missed something….

The lining of the dress showed any time you were a position other than standing up straight.

Sitting, bending of any kind and (of course) dancing, one could see 2-3 inches of different-fabric dress lining sticking out the bottom of the dress hem.

So, what else could we do?

Right before the wedding ceremony, we found a pair of scissors and helped each other quickly hack off a few inches of fabric!

Obviously not as planned, but still a real moment at a real wedding.

One thing you might not realize about wedding photographers:

We’re pretty much mostly all friends and supportive of each other.

One of my favorite things to do is second shoot a wedding with a photographer-friend who is *technically* my “competition.”

A few weeks ago, I helped Renee Bowen shoot a gorgeous, intimate Santa Clarita backyard wedding with Paul and Andrea.

Paso Robles Vineyard wedding : Album Design : Keith and Shannon

So many couples spend thousands of dollars on their wedding photographer…. and then just let their images sit on a disc for years and years

Ahem. I am absolutely guilty of this.

Which is why I was so glad that Keith and Shannon chose a wedding package that included a big, fat, 30 page, 12×12 inch, leather-bound wedding album.

The wedding day holds such an important part of each couple’s story … and the wedding album is such a lovely way to record that story.

When my couples get a wedding album, my goal is to put together a pre-design for them with the images I have selected to best tell the story of their love, of their family and of their full wedding day. After the pre-design, couples have a solid jumping-off point to tweak and shift and adjust the album to include their own favorite photos and moments.

Below are just a few images and layouts from Keith and Shannon‘s wedding album, recently delivered to them.

Thick pages like this really help protect the album from accidental creases or wrinkles caused by little hands that will undoubtedly want to pour over the album again and again.

While the center fold of the album IS visible, it in no way distracts from the full-page designs that take up more than one side.

If there are particular images that you just LOVE, we can print all the way to the edge of the page for the most dramatic effect.

I’m quite proud of this album, and I know Keith and Shannon are too …

Am I the one for you?

If you’ve never been married before, I encourage you to think about this before starting heavy planning on your wedding …

What is the number one thing you want to remember about your wedding?

Is it the way your cake plate matched your garter?

Is it the perfect way your reception seat assignments were laid out?

Is it that all your bridesmaids had the exact same hair-do?

If these are the kind of things that are important to you, I’m not sure I’m the right wedding photographer for you.

When I first started to fall in love with photography, I knew that documentary-style was much more for me than fashion-style photography.

I toyed (briefly) with the idea of photojournalism and going to find a job for a newspaper, or going to create my own work in the slums of Buenos Aires …. or something similar. But honestly, those kind of stories depress me.

Yes, covering the hurricane disasters ARE important … and I have SO much respect for photographers who are willing to risk their lives to document stories like that.

Mostly because I am NOT.

I would much rather document events where everyone wants to be there and has been looking forward it for months.

I want to document happy. I want to document love. I want to document authentic relationships.

I look for laughter, I look for affection and I am am ALWAYS on the look out for the real moments between friends and family.

Rest assured …. I WILL take photos of your gorgeous centerpieces. I will ABSOLUTELY document your elaborate candy buffet. I am MORE THAN HAPPY to get the perfect shot of your once-in-a-lifetime Christian Louboutins.

But if those things are your #1 priority in getting married – I’ll be happy to help you find a different photographer who might be a better fit.

Happy Anniversary Keith and Shannon

One year ago today I was in Paso Robles watching (and photographing) some sweet friends getting married… At a winery in one of their favorite travel destinations, over-looking wine country.

So gorgeous …. so happy …

Keith and Shannon are truly adorable together – and we are so glad we can call them our friends!

Congrats on your first year of marriage!

P.S. They just signed off on their album design and got it a couple weeks ago …. Just in time to show off for their anniversary. A post with a couple images from the album is coming!
