If you’ve never been married before, I encourage you to think about this before starting heavy planning on your wedding …

What is the number one thing you want to remember about your wedding?

Is it the way your cake plate matched your garter?

Is it the perfect way your reception seat assignments were laid out?

Is it that all your bridesmaids had the exact same hair-do?

If these are the kind of things that are important to you, I’m not sure I’m the right wedding photographer for you.

When I first started to fall in love with photography, I knew that documentary-style was much more for me than fashion-style photography.

I toyed (briefly) with the idea of photojournalism and going to find a job for a newspaper, or going to create my own work in the slums of Buenos Aires …. or something similar. But honestly, those kind of stories depress me.

Yes, covering the hurricane disasters ARE important … and I have SO much respect for photographers who are willing to risk their lives to document stories like that.

Mostly because I am NOT.

I would much rather document events where everyone wants to be there and has been looking forward it for months.

I want to document happy. I want to document love. I want to document authentic relationships.

I look for laughter, I look for affection and I am am ALWAYS on the look out for the real moments between friends and family.

Rest assured …. I WILL take photos of your gorgeous centerpieces. I will ABSOLUTELY document your elaborate candy buffet. I am MORE THAN HAPPY to get the perfect shot of your once-in-a-lifetime Christian Louboutins.

But if those things are your #1 priority in getting married – I’ll be happy to help you find a different photographer who might be a better fit.

Instax mini at Hearst Castle

A few weeks ago, we visited Hearst Castle for a weekend trip …

sidenote: If you are ever visiting central California and have the time, Hearst Castle is SUCH an interesting place: William Randolph Hearst’s over-the-top “vacation” home he built on his vast acres on the CA coast.

Amazing.

Fortuitously, I also got my newest camera – Fuji Instax Mini – just a few weeks earlier and brought it along to play with.

I’m still getting used to the exposures – only having “indoors”, “cloudy” and “sunny” for settings instead of all the manual intricacies like on my normal cameras is very very different!

But so fun …. you’re never quite sure what you’re going to get, and the magic of the image appearing cannot be duplicated ….

Styled photo shoot part 2

For the 2nd part of our Just Because styled portrait shoot … we had given up on the balloons.

Which reminds me, I have another idea for a styled photo shoot, but it would be a NIGHTMARE for a windy day … so I have to get up the courage

My friend Maggie had come along to shoot, and she noticed this interesting little corner near where we had been photographing with balloons.

Blue door. Red tile. Cement stage. … all fun things!

Sidenote to photographers: When having a friend model for you, a model’s background in theater and acting is always a plus

Balloons styled photo shoot – part 1

Finally! Time for some more photos from that just for fun, styled photo shoot I did a month or so ago …

First of all – SUPER HUGE thank you to my friends and family who helped me with this. Just for fun! So so so so grateful to you all!

To Maggie – for shooting with me and letting me borrow your dining room chairs

To Angela – for getting all dolled up and driving all the way out there

To Daniel and Jenae – for wrangling 42 balloons. In the wind.

To Andrew – for showing up even though you had other things to do, untangling balloons and carrying 6 chairs at once.

Y’all are the best!

And I’m sorry the wind foiled our plans.

Boy did it ever.

I had these grand plans and mental images of cascades of balloons in a rainbow of colors. 6 chairs. 6 colors of the rainbow (just purple. Not indigo AND violet). One gorgeous girl in all white.

It was going to be fantastic.

But it turns out I picked an absurdly windy day. The 42 balloons (7 each of the 6 colors) turned into about 5. We lost all the green ones to the wind, we lost about 5 different ones to popping (being blown against something), we lost pretty much the rest of them to a huge knot. Andrew and Maggie spent a long time trying to untangle the balloons from one another, but it was pretty futile.

We did untangle a couple, and got some fun shots. How could we not with this model?

Jessica Claire Workshop : sneak peek

Don’t tell her, but I have a little bit of a girl crush on Jessica Claire.

So, you can imagine how incredibly excited I’ve been for the last couple months anticipating attending one of her wedding photography workshops (which I have only ever heard good things about).

Tuesday I drove (way way) down to Orange County to meet about 15 or 20 different photographers, talk about owning and running a wedding photography business, and watch and learn as Jessica shoots through a mock-wedding.

And, oh my word, that styled shoot was GORGEOUS.

You’ll see.

Sneak Peek : Just for Fun photo shoot with Angela

Saturday I organized a Just-for-fun photo shoot.

(note: I have some ideas for more so email me if you want in, either as a photographer, model, stylist or whatever you think)

Super big thank you to my friends who love me – Daniel and Jenae (for picking up and transporting 42 balloons), Angela for getting all dolled up and driving so far to model, Maggie for loaning me her dining room chairs and other help/ideas along the way. And Andrew for showing up at the location as a surprise! He’s always a big help!

I’ll post more about the day later (once I’ve gone through the images) ….

Los Angeles Portraits – Josh and Maggie – 5 year anniversary (part 2)

Part 2 of Josh and Maggie’s Anniversary portrait shoot.

Eleanor has the most adorable smile …. I think she looks so much like Maggie …

I don’t know why, but something about the blue dress + green tall trees reminds me of Alice in Wonderland…

As the sun was going down and we were running out of light, Eleanor discovered the dirt … .

This child loves dirt and sand…. I kid you not.

And loved nothing more than just picking up handfuls and throwing them every which way …

We love this family.

Although, I don’t want Andrew to hang out with Eleanor any more than necessary because he already has some serious baby fever ….

Los Angeles Portraits – Josh and Maggie – 5 year anniversary

So excited to finally reveal this portrait session!! I’ve had to wait because Maggie wanted to have the first reveal at their Ice Cream Social Anniversary party …

Our friends Josh and Maggie recently celebrated their 5th wedding anniversary and wanted portraits to celebrate.

I love this idea – and confess I have already planned on professional portraits for every 5 years of Andrew and my anniversaries.

First of all, you should never (ever) forget about professional photos after you get married. Even if you are a photographer yourself, it is always worthwhile to get in front of the camera, hand off the shooting-responsibility to someone else and get photos of yourself.

Second of all, Maggie and Josh (like Andrew and I) didn’t get engagement pics 5 years ago so other than their wedding day don’t really have any really good images of just the 2 of them.

I love love love these images (more on Friday) but have to give all the credit to Maggie for how they turned out.

She totally styled her family – Maggie’s shoes match Josh’s socks and tie and Eleanor’s shoes. She took the time and extra couple bucks to get her hair done and go dress shopping just for this. She suggested the location and bringing the black chairs (which I LOVE).

Seriously, Maggie is amazing. When you have your own portraits done, think about details like this because they totally make the images.

On to the shots …

All taken in an orange grove just off the 126 freeway here in SoCal.. …

These next to are some of my FAVORITES ….

As Maggie told me, while they wanted the portrait session to be about Josh and Maggie, and their relationship, celebrating 5 years of marriage – they couldn’t possibly forget about their little girl … “the most important thing in the last 5 years”

As you can imagine, though, a year-and-a-half-old is not necessarily cooperative for posed family portraits.

We got her in the shot at all just by distracting her with an unripe orange that she brought to and from her parents …

Ah, but all children are bribe-able …

Eleanor loved being lifted up by either arm and her undeniable joy is so plain on her face …

5th Anniversary – Ice Cream Social and Portrait session preview

The beginning of August, our friends Josh and Maggie celebrated their 5th wedding anniversary. And about a week ago, they had an Ice Cream Social to celebrate the same with their friends and family.

I made sure to arrive RIGHT at the beginning so I had some good sunset light for photos, because Maggie’s parties are always stylish ….

I’m never disappointed.

Pink, orange and yellow. With these big tissue paper pom poms hung strategically from the terrace. (I’m gonna get Maggie to tell me how she made them).

p.s. the party was at Maggie’s mom’s house ….. returning to the scene of the crime – same place they got married 5 years ago.

We did an anniversary portrait session a few weeks ago – in an orange grove off the 126 on the way to Ventura – and she had some of the images up to decorate, along with vases of oranges. I haven’t been able to post them before now – because she wanted to wait until after the party. But I’ve got a couple posts full coming up of all sorts of cuteness. Stay tuned for more of those …

Ice cream social = all sorts of good sweets. I intentionally had salad for dinner before coming so I could eat all this stuff with no guilt!
